About Psychosomatic Medicine

Psychosomatic medicine focuses on understanding the intricate interplay between the mind, brain, body, spirituality, and social context. It seeks to understand how these factors contribute to the onset of mental and physical symptoms and issues while also aiming to restore people to optimal health, both physically and mentally.

Individuals with medical conditions may experience specific psychiatric and neuropsychiatric disorders. In some cases, primary care physicians and other medical specialists may recommend a psychiatric evaluation. Additionally, individuals with general psychiatric disorders or stress-related issues are also encouraged to seek evaluation and outpatient treatment services at PSISA.

What to Expect from PSISA's Outpatient Mental Health Programs

During the initial visit, our priority is to assess the concerns that led you to seek psychiatric or psychotherapeutic consultation. This comprehensive evaluation takes into account medical, psychological, and social factors.

First Visit

As part of this process, we first request that you complete the necessary forms. These forms will provide us with essential health and medical history information. Feel free to download and complete them before your appointment. Additionally, we offer screening tools that can be used during the evaluation or self-administered at home before your visit. In the first session, we will formulate an initial assessment and treatment plan, which will be continuously reviewed as we progress together.

We will gather information about any current medications and past psychiatric medications. We will also need details about other treating physicians and therapists and your written consent to share information with them. Please bring this information to your appointment.

Subsequent Visits

Subsequent visits are scheduled based on individual needs. If medications are prescribed as part of the treatment, follow-up appointments will be arranged within a few days to weeks to assess their effectiveness. Psychotherapeutic interventions are also conducted throughout treatment.

Most therapy sessions will last for 20 to 30 minutes and will involve a concise assessment of the effects and side effects of medications and any other medical concerns. Additionally, based on individual requirements, patients may benefit from more intensive formal psychotherapy, typically consisting of 45-minute sessions conducted weekly.

Other Outpatient Treatment Services

If patients do not require therapy, we will schedule medication management sessions. These sessions typically involve a 15-minute follow-up to review the effects of the medications and make any necessary changes.

We provide after-hours emergency contact for patients, but we kindly ask that you reserve its use for true emergencies. The same phone number will be forwarded to an answering service, which can connect you with a clinician on call to assist with emergencies.

If you need a refill for a previously prescribed medication, please call your pharmacy to request it. They will fax a refill request to our office, and we will authorize it if appropriate. However, we highly recommend that patients keep track of their available refills. Please be aware that certain controlled medications require a written prescription for each refill. If you have made prior arrangements with your physician, you may not need an appointment for a written prescription. In this case, please request the service from our office, and there will be a $15 charge. Alternatively, you may schedule an appointment each time you need a medication refill.

Benefits of Mental Health Disorder Treatment

Going through mental health disorder treatment can provide numerous benefits, including:

Improved understanding of your mental health condition

Through therapy and other treatments, patients can gain insight into their mental health disorder, its underlying causes, and how to manage it effectively.

Enhanced coping mechanisms

Mental health treatment equips participants with healthy coping strategies for managing stressors and triggers in life.

Improved relationships

As patients work through their mental health issues, they can develop healthier communication patterns and behaviors that positively impact relationships.

Reduced risk of substance abuse

Many people with mental health disorders may turn to drugs or alcohol as a means of self-medicating. Through treatment, our patients can address their underlying issues and reduce the likelihood of turning to substances.

At the Psychosomatic Institute of San Antonio, we understand that mental health disorder treatment is not a one-size-fits-all approach. That's why we offer personalized and comprehensive care to meet the unique needs of each individual.
